Instructions
Make the Hat:
Trace a stocking hat shape onto cardboard and cut it out with a utility knife. Slide the cardboard inside the hat.
Make a pom-pom for the hat by wrapping yarn around a cereal box about 75 times. Remove from box by carefully sliding off.
Cut the yarn in half. It should be about 18″ long when cut.
Cut the yarn again into thirds and stack the piles together.
Tie a piece of yarn around the center and tightly double knot to create a pom-pom. Trim as desired
.Thread the ends of the pom onto the top of the hat. Do this by sticking the yarn and a pen through the knit hat. You could also use a large sewing needle or crochet hook. Secure with a knot.
Cut 4 long pieces of yarn, about 24″ each, and thread them through the back of the hat. Tuck the yarn in the hat and pull it through. You could use a needle or crochet hook to do this.
These pieces are used to attach the hat to the post. Attach the hat to the post by tying the two pieces of yarn around the post and securing with a bow or knot.
Make the Snowman Face and Buttons with Vinyl:
Cut out the eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons using the SVG file and a Cricut Explore Air 2.
Cut out the nose with orange vinyl and weed.
Cut out the eyes and buttons with black vinyl and weed.
Peel the pieces from the backing and place them onto your porch post, pressing gently onto the post.
Make the Snowman Scarf:
You can use any scarf you like. This one is a cheap blanket cut into a strip.
Tie a scarf around the post. Fold the scarf in half, wrap it around the post and tuck the loose ends into the loop.
Notes
The porch pillars used in this tutorial are 5.5″ square, so putting this on a board would work, too! Both large hardware stores sell pre-primed (white) 1′ x 6′ pieces of wood that are about 8′ long. Purchase one and ask the store to cut it in half.
